CMHC’s 2026 Mortgage Consumer Survey reports that 63% of mortgage consumers plan to renovate within five years, and 46% of those planning renovations expect to spend at least $20,000.
Statistics Canada’s Residential Renovation Price Index tracks contractor price changes across 37 renovation projects in 15 census metropolitan areas. It includes materials, labour, equipment, overhead and profit; it excludes value-added taxes and design costs.
There is no honest one-size-fits-all renovation price.
A paint-and-flooring refresh, a bathroom, a legal basement suite and a full-house gut are completely different jobs. Location, labour, the condition of the house, materials, permits and what appears after demolition can move the number dramatically.
Shackadoo’s rule for numbers
Changing figures get a date, a geography and a source. Toronto pricing is labelled Toronto. U.S. research is labelled U.S. research. Industry planning ranges are not presented as government averages.
💰 Real Canadian numbers — eventually from Shackadoo too
As real projects arrive, we can separate published planning ranges from what Shackadoo contributors actually report by province, project type and year.
A tax credit can matter — but eligibility is specific
The federal Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit is an example of why dated information matters. It applies only to qualifying renovations that create an eligible self-contained secondary unit; it is not a general renovation rebate.
